CARDIFF INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT AIMS FOR MORE EUROPEAN DESTINATIONS

Airport's management team targeted airlines at World Route Development Forum.
Senior managers at Cardiff International Airport hope to secure flights to more European destinations for next year, following high-level meetings at the latest World Route Development Forum, held in Copenhagen.
This annual two-day event, attended by 1,700 aviation executives, including 275 airlines, provides the forum for airlines and airports to explore and negotiate potential new routes.
A senior team from Cardiff International Airport, led by Managing Director, Jon Horne, held 17 private meetings to discuss a number of target routes, including destinations in France, Germany, and other European centres.
"It was noticeable that recent successes and developments at Cardiff International have increased the level of interest in this airport among European airlines," said Mr Horne.
"While new services at Cardiff International, including those announced by Excel, Thomsonfly, and Zoom, have attracted the attention of other carriers, we found that many airlines were equally interested in the improvements taking place in surface access. The progress we are making with road and rail links were a particular talking point", he added.
The Cardiff team in Copenhagen included a senior representative from the Welsh Assembly Government.
"This was very beneficial in our discussions with airline executives who wanted to know about road and rail plans, and about plans for a Route Development Fund, following a recent EU confirmation that Cardiff International Airport will qualify for an extended period in any assistance for new routes", said Mr Horne.
"We are now taking a number of our discussions at the Forum to the next stage, of detailed studies, aimed at securing several new destinations for 2006", he said.
