Wales in the World conference

WALES IN THE WORLD
Holiday Inn, Cardiff
Monday 20 October 2008
Keynote Speaker : Rt Hon Rhodri Morgan, First Minister, National
Assembly for Wales
In the 21st Century when climate change and communications are creating a global milieu for the environment, economic development, culture, and sport, there are opportunities as never before for small nations to project themselves as players on the world stage.
As the One Wales coalition agreement between Labour and Plaid Cymru states, "In a globalising economy, those places which will prosper in the future will be those which offer the clearest sense of stability, sustainability and identity. When information flows around the globe in nano-seconds, so that it no longer matters if your desk is in Hirwaun or Honolulu, Snowdonia or Singapore, it will be the attractions of local natural assets - of coast and climate, of scale and cultural infrastructure - which will provide an economic edge."
This conference asks what opportunities will we be presented with in the coming decade for developing a more strategic approach to putting Wales on the world map. What would this entail? Are we punching above or below our weight outside our borders?
What objectives should we set ourselves in business, academia, culture and sport? How far can Wales go in developing a distinctive approach to international diplomacy?
