Airline expects one of the busiest May bank holiday weekends ever
bmibaby, the number one low cost airline at Cardiff International Airport, will be celebrating the start of its new flights to Barcelona tomorrow (24th May 2008). In the first week of operating, the airline will carry over 370 people to and from the airport to the cosmopolitan Spanish city. As a double celebration, bmibaby will welcome over 13,000 people to and from Wales this weekend, one of the busiest ever May bank holiday periods. Keen football fans will be heading to the famous Camp Nou stadium in Barcelona tomorrow (24th May) to see Catalunya play Argentina in an International friendly football match.
The new route to Barcelona will start with a two times a week service operating on Tuesday and Saturday, then from the 18th June 2008 the service will increase to three times a week, with an additional service on Wednesday. Fares start from just £24.99 one way, including taxes and charges.
Crawford Rix, managing director, bmibaby, said: "Barcelona is already a popular destination from our other UK bases and now travellers in Wales can access this stylish and dynamic city from their doorstep too. The inaugural flight is 95% full and forward bookings are extremely encouraging. In the first week of operating the new route, we will be carrying over 370 people to and from Cardiff International Airport to the cosmopolitan Spanish city.
"We are committed to low fares, new destinations and on time performance which is extremely attractive to consumers and is why we are the number one low cost carrier from Wales. We will continue to add more dots to the map to strengthen our position as the largest low cost carrier from Cardiff."
Patrick Duffy, managing director, Cardiff International Airport, commented: "We are delighted to see the Barcelona route coming through and wish the route the greatest success with bmibaby. It is particularly poignant too given the cultural connection between Barcelona and Wales and the fact that our corporate parent, abertis, is based in Barcelona.
"We hope that this can be the start of a new phase of route development from Cardiff International Airport."
The airline flies to 13 destinations from Cardiff International Airport: Alicante, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Belfast (Intl), Edinburgh, Faro, Gdansk, Glasgow (Intl), Jersey, Malaga, Murcia, Palma and Warsaw. Fares start from just £18.99 one way including taxes and charges.
