Tartan Fever Hits Cardiff Airport
11 March 2005
More than 4,000 Welsh rugby fans are flying to Edinburgh this weekend from Cardiff International Airport for Wales' fourth Six Nations clash against Scotland on Sunday 13 March.
Most of the fans fly out on Friday 11 March, which includes the Welsh Rugby Team and WRU representatives. The remaining 1,500 passengers departed on Thursday 10 or will leave tomorrow (Saturday 12 March).
A total of 20 specially chartered flights will transport the supporters to the Scottish capital with major airlines including Monarch, First Choice, Flybe and bmibaby.
Commenting on the airlift, Cardiff Airport managing director Jon Horne says, "I am sure that the excitement and anticipation will start here as Wales' Grand Slam hopes draws closer. We are confident that we will get everyone off to a great start to the weekend. Everyone at Cardiff International is looking forward to giving the Wales Team and all its supporters a true Welsh send-off."
The number of passengers departing over the three day period compares with an average 4,000 passengers handled on a busy day during the peak summer season, which demonstrates the vast scale of the operation. The increase in traffic will be in addition to the Airport's normal schedule and charter services.
