Fire Fighters raise nearly £2400 in walk for charity
25 August 2005
Ten fire fighters from Cardiff International Airport walked in full uniform and breathing apparatus to raise £2381 for the NSPCC.
The fire fighters, fire appliance and a support vehicle made
their way from the airport to Barry Island and then on to Barry,
where they stopped for a well deserved break at McDonalds.
The teams were bussed to the McDonalds on Penarth Road, courtesy of
Thomas of Barry, and the police escorted the group through the
streets of Cardiff, finally completing the journey at Owain
Glyndwr.
Throughout the walk fire fighters took it in turns to wear the
breathing apparatus for an average of 30 minutes at a time and
those not wearing the apparatus collected donations from
passers-by.
Sub Officer Andy Richards commented: "The fire fighters who took
part in the walk showed great strength walking so far in such
challenging conditions and they have been rewarded for all their
efforts through all the money that was raised during the day and
the people who came out onto the streets to watch the spectacle as
we passed through the streets of Barry and Cardiff.
"I would like to say thank you to Thomas of Barry, who supplied
support transport and to McDonalds in Barry and Penarth Road who
supplied the teams with much needed refreshments."
