Internet check-in at Cardiff
06 July 2006
After a successful two-week trial, Internet check-in becomes generally available at Cardiff International Airport today.
Equipment and software installed by the airport as part of this year's £7 million investment in facilities and capacity will enable airlines to offer passengers Internet check-in and seat selection from 24 hours up to four hours before their flight.
First airlines to use Cardiff's new system are KLM and bmibaby. Both airlines are initially making the system available for passengers with hand baggage only. These passengers will be able to print their own boarding cards and skip the check-in hall, going directly to the airport's security checks.
Also on the Internet, the airport's cwlfly.com booking service - where passengers have been able to book Cardiff-departing flights and holidays since last autumn - is being extended to offer a wider range of travel components and an interactive timetable for all the airport's services.
Said Cardiff International Airport's managing director Jon Horne: "Most of our investment this year is in highly visible facilities like walkways, immigration and baggage retrieval. Yet behind-the-scenes technology is going to play just as important a role in making the airport hassle-free and easy to use."
