Passenger numbers up 14 per cent
15 March 2007
Increase at Cardiff is the largest among major UK regional airports
Cardiff International Airport is among the fastest growing regional airports in the country, according to official figures.
Statistics from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) show that total passenger numbers at Cardiff broke the 2 million milestone in 2006, up from just under 1.8 million in 2005 - a total increase of almost 250,000.
The 14 per cent increase was the largest of any UK regional airport handling more than 1 million passengers.
The CAA figures show that overall, UK airports handled 235 million passengers last year, an increase of nearly 3 per cent on 2005. Meanwhile traffic at regional airports has doubled over the past decade from 48 million in 1996 to 98 million in 2006.
Jon Horne, Managing Director at Cardiff International Airport, said: "Last week we were able to announce an 18 per cent increase in passenger numbers in January and February compared with the same period in 2006, and now we have figures for the whole of last year, confirming that we are the fastest-growing major regional airport in the UK.
"We can expect to sustain that momentum with Flybe's recently
announced scheduled flights to Paris, plus several other new
scheduled flights for the summer timetable including bmibaby to
Murcia, Aer Arann to Nantes, Thomsonfly to Barcelona, Flybe to
Belfast City and Highland Airways to Anglesey."
