Serco awarded airport contract
01 December 2008
Cardiff International Airport is delighted to announce that from 01 December 2008 the management of the Airport Fire and Rescue Services will be transferred to Serco Integrated Services Ltd.
The contract will include the management of all associated services such as primary response to fire and other emergency events, adverse weather response such as snow clearance from runways and taxiways, in-house training and general maintenance of the airport's fire station and facilities.
Serco will take over the employment of a team of 51 staff, including the firefighters and their management team. This will ensure that new staff will now enjoy the career opportunities available within the Serco Group, which currently employs over 50,000 staff around the world.
Cardiff International Airport is keen to draw upon the expertise Serco has gained in providing similar services at other airports around the UK such as Birmingham International Airport and Bristol Filton Airport.
Patrick Duffy, the airport's managing director commented: "We're looking forward to the start of a new relationship with Serco. The scale, experience and resources the company has to offer will bring benefits to the Fire Service resulting in improved efficiency and long term savings.
"The contract will commence in December 2008 and the changeover will be seamless with no detrimental impact on safety or service levels at the airport.
We decided to transfer the management of the Fire Service so we can concentrate on the airport's core business. The growth and development of the site and route network is a main priority as we aim to increase passenger numbers and both the services and facilities available to them."
Serco managing director, Ray Foran added, "We are very much looking forward to working in partnership with CWL's own team in the provision of these very important services. This initiative will greatly enhance our position in the market place and allow us to further build upon the provision of integrated services in the airport sector".
The contract will commence on the 1st December 2008.
